MYRNA

I set a pretty sculpture that might be a dinosaur back on the shelf and pick up the next trinket the pups have left for Muriel to admire. I don’t think she’s coming with our next cohort of visitors, but that could change in a heartbeat. Muriel goes where the wind blows her, and she has sharp enough teeth that very few people seem to get in her way.

I like her very much.

I leave the sticky finger marks on Braden’s clay masterpiece, as they’re clearly an essential part of the art. I glance over in the direction of the sanctuary cabin as I set it down. I can’t see the pinecones from here, or even the cabin, but I do believe every last wolf in this pack has come by to sniff them this morning.

My cleaning assistant follows my gaze and scowls. “Doesn’t anyone in this pack have work to do?”

I pat my youngest son’s shoulder. It’s a marvel his pack sense works so well after all these years, even if it pains him. “One of them will likely bring us coffee shortly.”

Xander picks up the tools carefully arrayed by the bed that needed some kind of minute adjustment, according to a very picky bear. “Because we’re wolves who can’t fetch our own coffee?”

It’s when I’m around my boys that I realize just how much this pack has changed. We were always kind to each other—but he’s right. We didn’t used to be wolves who cherished the chance to bring a small gift to a packmate. Xander is falling in with that change just fine, even if he doesn’t want to admit it to itself or anyone else. “You did a good job with the kitchen maintenance. Even Brown couldn’t find anything to fix after you were done, and Shelley was very pleased at how pretty her spice cupboard looked.”

My son bites off a snarl. Mostly. “I’m not a pup, Mom. I don’t need the endless compliments.”

He never has—but he used to be more gracious about accepting the need of his pack to give them. “The right woman has picked you, then.”

That gets me a snort, and an eye roll for good measure. “She’s just beating me back into shape.”

She’s definitely doing that. “I considered gifting her my frying pan, but she’s never needed it.”

Xander pauses his work long enough to touch his cheek to the top of my head. “Mikayla is so proud you gave it to her. She lugged it all the way out to our base camp the other day just to fry up a few eggs.”

So I was told by the bear cub who carried it back to the den for her. Which Mikayla permitted because she understands the giving and receiving of small gifts very well. “It does make good fried eggs.”

Xander backs away and peers at the task list Stinky wrote out for him. “We made fried-egg sandwiches. Took some out to Milo and Ruby. Apparently Ruby likes hers with avocado in them.”

My eyebrows go up.
